Live Heat Pressing: The Event Service More Decorators Should Be Offering

If you've got a heat press, you've already got everything you need to offer one of the most in-demand event services in the decoration industry. Live heat pressing is a genuine revenue opportunity most decorators haven't tapped yet.

Here's why it works, what it looks like in practice, and how to get started.

What is live heat pressing?

Live heat pressing is exactly what it sounds like: setting up a heat press at a live event and pressing custom transfers onto garments or products in real time. Attendees choose their design, watch it get pressed in seconds, and walk away with something made specifically for them on the day.

The appeal is immediate. There's no waiting, no shipping, no ordering window. The product is made in front of them, which makes it feel limited edition even when it isn't.

A new revenue stream from equipment you already own

For decorators, live heat pressing is one of the lowest-barrier ways to expand what your business offers. You already have the press. You already know how to use it. The additional step is ordering your transfers in advance, showing up, and pressing on demand.

Events, markets, pop-ups, school fairs, sports days, brand launches: any occasion where people gather is an opportunity. You're not replacing your existing work, you're adding a service with a completely different margin profile.

The setup is also simpler than most people expect. Supacolour transfers arrive pre-cut and ready to press. No weeding, no preparation on site. Press, peel, done. A good operator can move quickly even with a queue.

Why brands and event organisers love it

Live heat pressing isn't just a revenue opportunity for decorators. It's become one of the more effective tools in the brand activation toolkit.

The reason is straightforward: people remember experiences, not giveaways. Handing someone a pre-made tote or a branded tee is forgettable. Pressing one in front of them, personalised to the moment, is something they talk about. The product becomes a souvenir of the experience rather than just branded merchandise.

It's also highly visible. Every person who walks out wearing or carrying something you just pressed is a walking advertisement for the brand running the activation and for the quality of the print.

How we did it at Real Groovy

For Record Store Day 2026, we partnered with AS Colour to bring live heat pressing to Auckland's iconic Real Groovy Records. AS Colour supplied the blanks: their Block Tee and Basic Tote. We pressed Supacolour Wearable transfers onto the tees and Promotional transfers onto the totes, right there in the store, while customers browsed vinyl between live music, face painting, and everything else that makes Real Groovy what it is.

The result was a limited edition souvenir people actually wanted. Something tied to the day, the place, and the occasion. Not a freebie. Something made for the moment.

Why heat transfers work better than other methods at live events

Other printing methods require significant setup, equipment, and mess. Screen printing at a live event means inks, squeegees, flash dryers, and a single colour limit unless you're running multiple screens. It's not impossible but it's not practical for most events.

Heat transfers are. The press time for Supacolour Wearable and Promotional transfers is 10–15 seconds, with a hot peel straight off the press. No ink to manage, no curing required, no mess. Clean, fast, and consistent: every press looks the same as the one before it.

The right transfer for every item

For garments including tees, hoodies, and sweatshirts, Supacolour Wearable is the right choice. It's the number one selling heat transfer for a reason: vibrant colour, soft hand feel, and reliable results on cotton and polycotton.

For bags, totes, and other promotional items, the Promotional transfer is specifically formulated to adhere to the wider range of fabrics and coatings you find on promo gear. Standard transfers don't always bond properly to these materials. Promotional does.

Both are OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified, available with PANTONE colour matching as standard, and available with SupaMetallics at no extra cost.
